Doors Thrown Open

A Disney Frozen-themed devotional for kids

“…We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory…”

-Romans 5:1-2 (MSG)

Have you ever set your sights on something you wanted to accomplish, and circumstances outside your control prevented you from achieving your goal? People sometimes call that a closed door. On a more positive note, there is the familiar phrase, “When God closes a door, He opens a window.” Though it might sound like nothing more than a feel-good saying, it alludes to the truth that God is always for us: He will make a way for what’s best in our life. Whether or not it looks exactly the way we thought it might, He will come through.

There is no greater example of this than when God came near. While we were far from God in our sin, He made the most epic move in all of history: through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Heavenly Father took the doors that were closed to us and threw them open…forever. There is now no barrier between Him and those who believe. He wants to be near us.

We will never have to feel like Princess Anna constantly knocking on her sister’s door asking her to come out and play. Just think of what it must have felt like to experience what Olaf describes as “slam! Doors shutting everywhere!” In Frozen II, the fun-loving and hilarious Olaf dramatically recaps the OG Frozen to bring the new characters of the sequel up to speed on all they had missed from Anna and Elsa’s life. Olaf holds his tree-branch arms out in front of him, slams his twiggy hands against each other, and mimicks doors closing all around him.

Gratefully, Olaf also reminds us that’s not the end of the story. As we know, love changes everything. For us, that love came more than 2,000 years ago in the form of Jesus. Anna and Elsa were Frozen without their awakening to love. They were stuck on the outside, unable to experience the closeness of each others’ presence. We will never have to lock the doors of our hearts like what Queen Elsa agonizingly did. We can say to God, “Come in, come in!” because Jesus emphatically shouts “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

Reflection & Prayer:

Where has God thrown open a door in your life? Consider journaling a response. Then, share it with us. Tell us how God has moved in your life and heart in the comments. We want to hear from you!

Dear God,

Thank you that you love us so much that you want to be with us forever. By sending Your Son to Earth to live perfectly and then to die on a cross, You guided us through Your doors to salvation, as a good shepherd guides His sheep through the gate. In Your Word, you tell us that You are “the way, the truth and the life.” Help us to enter into that Way and follow You wherever You lead. Lord, I open the door of my heart to You. Thank You for entering in. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
